It’s an involved process:
- Assuming your barn is structurally sound, the first step is to carefully inspect the surface to be painted. Dry rot, “weathered” fibers, and splintered planks all need repair or replacement. - After checking and replacing any worn caulking, the next step is a power washing to remove old and peeling paint. The barn has to completely dry out then we go after the rest of the paints with scrapers.
- If the barn is mostly “weathered” wood, an oil based paint is called for. Otherwise an acrylic latex will be used. Typically, barns will take two coats of paint.
Backyard Sheds
Barns are big and beautiful but fairly rare. Much more popular are backyard sheds used principally for storing lawn care equipment. When they are new, they can be an attractive addition to the lawn. But after a few years of Northern Virginia weather, the shed can start to look pretty dingy.
Companies that manufacture sheds typically spray paint them. Spray painting is the most cost effective way to get the job done, but in the case of sheds, it results in an uneven application of paint. The flat (plank) sections will be even and smooth but grooves, corners, and ends are hit and miss.
